Obituary

With sadness, we announce the sudden passing of Raffaele on February 29, 2020 at the age of 83. Beloved husband for 61 years to Carolina and devoted father to Marisa (Michael Granieri) and Loris (Paula). Proud Nonno of Elana (fiancée John-Paul Compagnone), Simone, Jeremy, Jonathan, and Karina. Predeceased by his siblings Giovanni, Emilio, Antonio, Alfredo and Adamo. He will forever be remembered by his surviving siblings Oscar, Achille, Alberto and Costandina. A dear Uncle, he will be missed by his many nieces, nephews and their families.

At the age of 17, with no English and very little money, Raffaele embarked on a voyage to Canada to build a new life. He settled in a house with his brothers, cousins and an uncle. Soon he met and fell in love with his future wife Lina. They married, bought a small house, and raised a daughter and son. Raffaele was a hard worker and became a factory foreman. If working full time wasn’t enough, after-hours Raffaele started his own custom mattress business. Raffaele was a friendly soul; he had a quiet way of putting others at ease. For Raffaele, there was always time to help others. In his senior years, Raffaele spent his time working in the garden, helping neighbours, and playing cards. For all who knew him, Raffaele was a friendly giant of a man. Raffaele will be truly missed by his family, friends and neighbours.

Visitations will be held at the Bernardo Funeral Home (2960 Dufferin St., south of Lawrence Ave. W.) on Wednesday March 4 from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated in All Saints Church (1415 Royal York Rd., north of Eglinton Ave. W.) on Thursday, March 5, 2020 at 9:30 a.m. Entombment will follow at Glendale Memorial Garden (1810 Albion Rd., at Highway 27).

In memory of Raffaele, donations may be made to the Humber River Hospital Foundation.

Cari Lillina ,Marisa e Loris
Tonino e Maria Antonietta

Dear Ralph

We are truly sorry we didn’t tell you how much you meant to us, or convey to you how much we admired and loved you, before you left for your extended journey, a journey we will all be taking one day.

You died doing what you always did best, helping others.

Yours is a life to be celebrated and emulated.

To our family, you were more than just a supportive brother-in-law, and Zio, you were our friend.

You mean more to your family, and those of us you loved you, than we can ever express in words--a personal experience your family is in harmony with, and that resonates within them.

You were an excellent husband, a supportive father and an outstanding grandfather. And more importantly, you were always a kind, loving and approachable human being.

You spent many years with the love of your life, Lina. You had a loving and solid commitment. You were together for over 60 years and went every where and did everything together.

You will be missed by every life you touched, and will continue to watch over, forever. You will be with us, always. Although, now, your influence will be coming from a different place; a place in our hearts and thoughts; and you will never leave us.

We will always have a place in our hearts for you, and remember all the good you did, and the kind and loving human being you are. We know, you will continue to look out, and be there, for your wife, your family, and everyone you loved. Your influence will encourage them to surpass their capabilities and inspire them to lead the very best lives they can. You will always be a part of them.

Ralph, “you done good”! Not many of us will leave a legacy as compelling and powerful as yours. Your life was full and rich. Now it’s time for you to have a well-deserved rest, and to leave the day-to-day things to those you loved, inspired, and are proud of, and believe in. It’s their turn to continue to make you proud. You will constantly be watching over them, as they do all the wonderful things you know they are capable of.

Thank you for sharing your life with us.

For many years, Ralf (as my parents called him,) was a neighbour my folks often spoke about with affection. He was my Dad's best friend in his later years. Ralf was very generous and helpful to my parents. He often visited when I was there. He was very pleasant to talk to. As a horticulturalist, like myself, he often gave advice to my parents about their vegetable and fruit gardens. He would often give them their tomato plants. Because I lived so far away, I appreciated that he would give my Mom rides to the hospital to visit my Dad when he was failing. I, as well as my Mom and siblings, feel that Ralf was a great friend and his memory will always put a smile on our faces. Leonard Chaplinsky
