Obituary for Gabriel Moreira

Gabriel Moreira, a soccer enthusiast and long-time Toronto resident, passed away peacefully on July 5, 2018 at the age of 84.

Gabriel is survived by his wife; Maria José (nèe Velosa); his sons, Luis (Pina), Gabriel (the late Connie) and Jose Miguel (Rose Anna); his grandchildren, Kayla (Scott), Lisa (Ben), Andrew (Jackie), Desean and Noah; and his great grandchildren Eisley Vieira, Henry Bartlett, Calvin Alexander.

Gabriel was a very devoted husband and father. Born in beautiful Funchal, Madeira, Gabriel worked to provide the best life for his family as a steelworker. This led them to Caracas, Venezuela and later, Toronto, Canada – the place they would eventually call home.

His passion for soccer (especially Benfica) never wavered – even in his final days he enjoyed hearing about the World Cup standings. If there was one thing everyone knew about Gabriel, it was how much he adored his wife. Married for over 60 years, they spent much of their time enjoying each other’s company and of course, watching soccer together on the week-ends. It was a simple life but they were always happy and grateful for the life they built.

Gabriel will be deeply missed by his family, friends and all who knew him.
